the roundup

Here are some things I really love right now.

Dinner parties - I'm going to a special one tonight [photo from 1968's The Party]

Very poofy tulle - see prom post [From Lobster and Swan]

Little, warm white lights - my latest art project is based around this concept [From (top to bottom) Lobster and Swan, 2005's A Lot Like Love, Van Gogh, Le Love, and 2008's Twilight]

Plaid flannel - I wear far too much of it and must be stopped [All from Lookbook except the last, of my friend Emma]

Bows - A lot of people hate bows, especially large bows on dresses, but I adore them [From top:
Lookbook, Nordstorm, and Smitten]

Holiday finery - My friend Ali bought a shiny, red, floor-length dress from Courage My Love in Toronto for $15, shortened it, made it strapless, and gave it a bubble hem, and I can't wait to see it [From top: Lookbook, BCBC Max Azaria, and Banana Republic]

The little black dress - I own at least ten of these, and can't stop. My dress for tonight is a new Lori M. number in simple black cotton [From top: Both BCBG Max Azaria, Unknown, and Little Black Dress Shop]

It's finally Christmas time. On Thursday, my parents and I went to our traditional Stuart MacLean show, which we do every year. He is absolutely fantastic, and his shows always make me laugh and feel warm and cozy from head to toe. He is an amazing story teller, and he also supports budding musicians from all across Canada, and has them plays at his shows. It was at these shows that I first heard Owen Pallet of Final Fantasy and Danny Michel from my home town of all places. This year it was Dala, these two girls who harmonize with each other stunningly.

Friday was my last day of class, and with it came warnings of heavy snowfalls and snow warnings. They were actually calling it "Snowmageddon," but on Friday morning it was beautiful outside. I brought everyone their presents, and also brought homemade shortbread, gingerbread and rum balls. However, the board soon sent out a warning letting us know that if we should head home if we lived further away. One of my best friends, Jasmine, and I live across the city, so we headed out early. Unfortunately, we got caught in the middle of the worst snow storm I have ever been outside in for hours! When I finally made it to my house through a foot of snow, my hair was so frozen that you could snap it and I couldn't feel my legs. I got into action though, got myself a cup of warm cocoa, ran myself a hot bath, and watched Pleasantville. Jasmine and I met all sorts of people on our adventure home, too, so it wasn't all bad in the end. That night we were snowed in, so I couldn't go to my friend's birthday at a club across the city or my other friend's get together on his return home from Toronto. I ended up spending the night with my mom though, decorating the tree and singing loudly to Christmas carols.

Today the city was covered in snow, the sun was shining bright and the sky was completely blue and clear. I drove out to Belmont Village and did the last of my Christmas shopping, and then spent the rest of the afternoon and evening cooking a fondue feast for my parents, my uncle and his girlfriend. We spent the evening drinking and getting progressively louder and more boisterous, and it ended with a confused game of Clue from 1963 (which I won.) It was an amazing time, the food was delicious, and I'm finally truly feeling the Christmas spirit.

Tomorrow it's supposed to snow as much as Friday, so making my way to Leyla's dinner party will be an adventure! I can't wait though, I have my outfit picked (my new black dress and blue accents), and Emma's going to be my date, in an androgynous manner. I can't wait! Also, Stas is finally back from Ottawa for the holidays, and is coming over for breakfast (eggs, toast, and avacado!) tomorrow morning. Photos and recaps to follow! I hope everybody is enjoying the holiday season with the people they love.

have yourself a merry little christmas

Just for some holiday fun, here are Calvin's annual snowman massacres, sent to me by my mom this morning. Every year we decorate large gingerbread men for the whole family, and we're considering doing the Undead: Christmas Style for next year's theme.

And also, my absolute favourite christmas song is Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

twilight

I always thought it would be deliciously fun to wear a largely poofy dress to prom, like a Betsey Johnson dress (which I would kill for, but fully realize will not happen.) Below are some examples of fantastically poofy prom dresses. I kind of think this is probably the only kind that suits me. (My favourite is the large yellow Betsey Johnson dress in the first photo)

I finally saw Twilight. Personally, I loved it. I thought Edward was played very awkward and flawed, yet still seamlessly graceful. Extremely well done, I fell in love. I also loved the very last scene at the prom, and the music they used and the lights on the gazebo - it's just stunning! Enough about that, however, I don't want to gush too much about Twilight. Here's a still of the prom scene - I just love the lights and the ambiance, it's spectacular. I have now seen the movie four times since.

The reason I got to see Twilight was because I went to Ottawa to visit and stay with friends (particularly Stas, of naked-with-guitar fame). It was also my friend Kasia's 19th birthday, so we all went out for beer and a movie. I got to meet a plethora of amazing people, and I checked out the University of Ottawa as well as Carleton, and let me say, Ottawa is a spectacularly beautiful city at Christmas time. Tiny lights line the streets everywhere, snowflakes are shone onto the face of the parliament buildings, tiny market stalls cover the pavement, and there are Christmas tree lots in the heart of downtown! Soon, the canal will be frozen over, and people will be able to tie up their skates and head out, grabbing a beaver tail in one of the stalls built into the walls on the way. I still have my heart set on Toronto, but I may just have to make a tradition of heading up to Ottawa every winter. I hope I can return in early February for Winterlude!

While there, I also picked up my first Benefit cosmetics purchase - I've always love Benefit. I bought their rosy lip and cheek tint, and it is marvelous. I like the way the warmer colour looks against my white, white pale skin (it makes me look like one of the living), and it's especially nice for the holidays. It reminds me of the plum-toned holiday looks Carmindy creates, like the one below. There's a really beautiful one in her 5 Minute Face book, but I will have to scan that so it'll be added later.

Today I went to the City Cafe Bakery for the first time as well, with Kylie and Emma. It was utterly spectacular - an eclectic and warm atmosphere, and delicious food! On her way out, the woman behind us wished us a very merry Christmas, which just made me feel good all the way up from my toes. What an amazing season!

Finally, there is the cutest black dress I want to get from the Bay for the holiday season, but we'll see if I have the funds. I am already envisioning myself in it in various situations, however, so I may as well have already bought it. I've got a large amount of Christmas baking to do over the weekend, and then tiny gift bags to make for friends and family alike. I hope you're all enjoying this season, I know I'm as busy as ever, but trying to enjoy it all the same! I have many parties, celebrations, and dinners to look forward to, and I hope you do too. Less than two weeks until Christmas!

creative

Hello everybody! It has been over a week since I last posted, and things are finally calming down (this is potentially one of the busiest weeks of my life) to some extent. I wanted to share a couple things that stood out to me in the last few days!

Firstly, this photo of Robert Pattinson and Camilla Belle going out for lunch together. What an amazing twosome (even if they are not dating), and I love this photo, even though it's just taken by the paparazzi!

Also, I love the new single Creative by Leon Jackson - supremely catchy! Check out the video here.
